Easter Seals is pleased to announce that Missouri State Representative Bill Deeken is serving as the Honorary Chair of the 5th Annual Walk With Me Jefferson City event. The event raises funds and builds awareness about disability services Easter Seals Missouri provides to area adults and kids. Walk With Me brings recipients of Easter Seals’ services together with individuals and businesses who are raising funds to support Easter Seals programs that create solutions that changes lives of children and adults with disabilities or other special needs.
Rep. Deeken and Easter Seals invite you and your family to participate in Walk With Me, Saturday, September 20th. Participants may choose from a one-mile Family Fun Walk or a timed 5K Run/Walk/Wheel. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the event begins at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Jefferson City at the intersection of Monroe Street and High Street in front of the Cole County Courthouse.
The entry fee is $15 and includes an official Walk With Me t-shirt. Participants are encouraged to form teams to raise additional funds for Easter Seals. Fundraising prize levels begin at $100 and include coffee mugs, coolers, t- shirts, sports chairs and vacation packages. To participate, register online at www.walkwithme.org/jefferson or call 1-800-664-5025 ext. 127.
Proceeds from Walk With Me benefit Easter Seals programs such as the Adult Day Services Gibbs Center for Independence in Jefferson City. At the Gibbs Center, young adults with developmental disabilities have an opportunity to maintain and enhance their daily living skills learned in school. Opportunities for group interaction and community outings help build social skills that keep families together. Mature adults enjoy a richer, fuller life while receiving medical support for age-related conditions that may otherwise result in pre-mature nursing home placement. The Gibbs Center’s safe, home-like setting offers participants a place where they can interact with others their age and share memories while family members are busy with their own lives.
The mission of Easter Seals is to “provide exceptional services that ensure all people with disabilities have equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play in their communities”. Easter Seals Missouri has helped children and adults with disabilities or other special needs gain greater independence for 80 years. Last year, Easter Seals Missouri offered 458,412 hours of service to 5,106 children, adults and families in Central Missouri, Metro St. Louis and in eight counties of Southwestern Illinois. Depending on the area served, Easter Seals Missouri programs include: adult day services; early intervention; inclusive child care; physical, occupational, and speech therapies; respite and in-home support services; day camps; and KARS (Kids Are Riding Safely) car seat loan program.
